Biden Should Stay True to His Working-Class Roots and Avoid Demagoguery of 'Corporate Fat Cats'

Joe Biden should stick to his working-class roots and refrain from engaging in demagoguery of "corporate fat cats" during the upcoming presidential debate with Donald Trump. While some progressive Democrats urge Biden to challenge Trump's friendly ties to corporate America and focus on populist appeals, this would be a mistake. These advisors are incorrect in their assumption that corporate America is widely resented by the public.

The majority of Americans have a positive view of successful businesses and do not hold them responsible for societal issues. The success of companies creates shared wealth for all Americans, reflected in the soaring financial markets that benefit average Americans through their pension and investment accounts. Moreover, business leaders are seen as stabilizing forces in society, and CEOs are considered the most trusted figures in society, according to the 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer survey.

Instead of running from his record of success, Biden should embrace it and contrast it with Trump's failed economic policies and reckless promises. Under Trump, the national deficit tripled to $3 trillion, and unemployment soared to its highest level since the 1970s. Biden's record, on the other hand, includes lowering the deficit, record-low unemployment, and increased wages amid a pandemic. Furthermore, Trump's economic failures include quadrupling the federal debt, worsening the COVID-19 recession, and risking a currency crisis through debasement of the U.S. dollar.

Biden should confidently present his track record of success in contrast to Trump's failures. He can highlight his administration's achievements in bringing down inflation, raising wages, and increasing employment and growth. Bidenomics has shown that it can create economic prosperity for all, not just the privileged few.

In conclusion, Biden should be true to his working-class roots, relying on his innate ability to connect with Americans, articulating that success is not a zero-sum game and that thriving businesses create opportunity and shared wealth for all. Instead of succumbing to the divisive rhetoric of 'corporate fat cats,' Biden should embrace his accomplishments and convey confidence in his ability to deliver economic prosperity for all Americans.
