Campus Protests Spread, and So Does Confusing Coverage

As nationwide campus protests in solidarity with Gaza continue, student journalists find themselves at the center of the action and under threat, sometimes facing police violence and detention.

The nuanced and dangerous story they are telling is sometimes captured in striking images, like those described above. And yet much of the coverage of the events has been simplistic, or outright misleading, with a particular focus on anecdotes of disruptions or claims of outside influence that are often later proven false.

Perhaps most importantly, this story continues to be overshadowed by the much larger one of Israel's bombardment of Gaza, which has taken a devastating toll on journalists there.

Other notable stories this week include the Washington Post's correction of a years-old error about a US military strike in Syria, and financial and staffing updates from multiple media organizations.
