College basketball: Kentucky thrives as a team, bigs stand out, and more from a big Saturday

In a week that saw Reed Sheppard grab the college basketball spotlight, Kentucky thrived as a team in Saturday's win over Arkansas. The Wildcats had six players score in double figures as they produced another offensive masterpiece, but it was the play of their bigs that offered the most reason for optimism. Freshmen Aaron Bradshaw and Zvonimir Ivišić both had strong outings, combining for 27 points and 13 rebounds, while veteran Tre Mitchell returned from injury to chip in 16 minutes. It was a reminder that this team is far from a one-man show.

Another star big also shined through as Duke's Kyle Filipowski had a sterling performance, leading all scorers with 21 points as the Blue Devils crushed Virginia, 73-48. It was Duke's defense that shined, holding UVA to just 29% shooting, but Filipowski provided the offensive catalyst the Blue Devils needed. Filipowski said after the game that he was healthy enough to play in Wake Forest last week, but he suffered the knee injury amid the court-storming aftermath of the loss.

It was also a week of contrasts for Michigan State. The Spartans missed their chance for a signature win, falling to Purdue, 80-74, but they also suffered a devastating loss at Ohio State. MSU is now 3-3 in its last six games, and with tough games against Northwestern and Indiana on the horizon, the Spartans will need to finish strong to feel secure on Selection Sunday.

Winners and Losers from Saturday include Villanova, which continues its impressive turnaround with a win over Providence that boosted its bubble prospects. Gonzaga also had a big week, picking up two Quad 1 wins to strengthen its at-large case. South Carolina kept its SEC title hopes alive, while USC's Isaiah Collier took over against Washington. USF clinched the AAC title in Year 1 of the Amir Abdur-Rahim era, and Western Michigan finished overtime with a miraculous full-court pass and game-winner.

Finally, Central Connecticut State won its first NEC title since 2014 after a win-and-you're-in victory, and Wake Forest took a devastating loss to Virginia Tech that likely crushed its at-large hopes.
