Copa America & Euro 2024: USMNT Face Elimination Threat After Loss To Panama While Germany & Spain Highlight Weekend Action

The round of 16 at UEFA Euro 2024 gets underway this weekend with some mouth-watering matchups and several groups still yet to be decided at Copa America.

After a thrilling set of group stage fixtures at UEFA Euro 2024, the round of 16 gets underway this weekend and headline matchups include Germany vs. Denmark and Spain vs. Georgia on Saturday, while England vs. Slovakia and Italy vs. Switzerland take place on Sunday. In Copa America, the United States finds its campaign on home soil in danger of elimination after a 2-1 loss to Panama on Thursday. Meanwhile, Mexico was stunned by Venezuela, and Argentina was held to a draw, meaning that no team has yet to qualify for the quarterfinals. This sets the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the group stage this Friday.

Here is a look at what to expect this weekend.

UEFA Euro 2024

This weekend's round of 16 action gets underway at 12 p.m. ET on FS1 when Switzerland takes on Italy in Berlin on Saturday. The Azzurri squeezed through as one of the best third-place finishers despite a lackluster group stage performance. They will need to raise their game if they are to progress further. Standing in their way are the Swiss who appeared to grow in confidence during an impressive display in a 2-0 win over Portugal in the final group game.

Also on Saturday, at 3 p.m. ET on FOX, hosts Germany take on Denmark in what should be an entertaining matchup between two sides who are used to competing at the latter end of major tournaments. The Germans emerged as Group A winners despite nearly slipping up against the Swiss on the final day, and they will be keen to avoid a repeat when they take on the Danes in Dortmund.

Denmark were not expected to qualify for the knockout stages after a poor start to the tournament, but a comeback win over Serbia and a draw with Croatia saw them through in second place behind Germany.

On Sunday, it is the turn of the round of 16 matchups at 12 p.m. ET on FOX as England face Slovakia at the Signal-Iduna-Park in Dortmund. The Three Lions qualified as Group B winners despite being held to a goalless draw by Scotland on Tuesday. Slovakia meanwhile, only secured their place in the knockout stages thanks to a last-gasp winner against Poland on Tuesday. This matchup sees third-place finishers Slovakia as underdogs, but they will be confident of causing another upset here.

The final round of 16 matchup takes place on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on FOX as Spain take on Georgia. The Spanish are the only team in Euro 2024 to win all three games and they are yet to concede a goal. They face an unlikely matchup against Georgia, who are participating in their first major tournament and have arguably been the surprise package so far.

Despite being the overwhelming favorites to win the game, Spain will be wary of the threat posed by Georgia, who are yet to concede a goal in the tournament and have the leading scorer in Germany, Georges Mikautadze, in their ranks. This has all the makings of a potential upset, with Spain facing a tricky route to the final now that they cannot play France unless they make it to the final.

Copa America

The group stage comes to a close this Friday, with the final set of games taking place at the same time as the UEFA Euro 2024 round of 16 matchups. At 6 p.m. ET on FS1, Colombia faces Costa Rica in a matchup between two sides who have already qualified for the quarterfinals and are expected to take the group easily.

At 9 p.m. ET on FS1, Paraguay faces tournament favorites Brazil, with the visitors looking to make it three wins from three after finishing as Group B winners ahead of Uruguay. Paraguay will be expected to struggle in this one after a poor showing in their 3-0 loss to Bolivia on Tuesday.

At 7:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Golazo Network, MLS action takes center stage as Montreal welcomes Philadelphia Union. The hosts are still searching for their first win of the season after drawing their first six games. Then, at 9 p.m. ET on FS1, Copa America group stage concludes with Argentina facing Peru.

The United States faces Uruguay in its second game of the tournament at 8:30 p.m. ET on Friday, June 29, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
