This label will provide information regarding the source, history and any alterations of the content in question, making it easier for users to decipher what is real and what is not.

The information included in the label will be broken down into three categories: "who created the content, what modifications were made to the content (if any) and where to find the original source of the content". Through this initiative, Google hopes to provide consumers with a better understanding of the digital content they consume, offering greater transparency, and ultimately allowing them to make their own judgments about the media they are exposed to.

How does it work?

The technology is in its infancy, but the groundwork is clear. Through the use of blockchain technology, an immutable and transparent ledger, algorithms can verify the authenticity of digital content. Through this, it is possible to create a cryptographic hash, a sort of fingerprint, that accompanies the content and provides a sort of "seal of approval". Any modifications to the content will result in a different hash, thereby alerting consumers to changes that have been made.

This initiative is a welcome addition to any previous efforts to fight AI content manipulation. As more and more users are gaining access to these powerful tools, the potential for misuse grows exponentially. The dangers of weaponized AI are well-documented and widely feared, but it's important not to overlook the corrosive effects of misinformation, especially when it's spread so easily through the use of these new and developing technologies.
