'Inside Out 2' Earns Mind-Bending $155 Million to Blow Past Expectations and Leap to Second- Biggest Disney- Pixar Opening Ever

After a mind-bending opening weekend at the domestic box office, Inside Out 2 has leaped to the second-biggest Disney-Pixar opening ever. The highly anticipated sequel, dubbed Inside Out 2, earned an estimated $155 million over the three-day weekend, putting it behind only 2018's Incredibles 2, which opened to $182.6 million in its debut.

The sequel to the Oscar-winning 2015 original movie, Inside Out 2, brought in another $140 million in international ticket sales, earning an estimated $295 million at the worldwide box office in its debut weekend. Inside Out 2 opened in 4,400 theaters Friday, with no major competition aside from Sony's Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, which crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office over the weekend. The newest installment in the Bad Boys franchise earned $33 million at 3,885 theaters in the Friday to Sunday frame for a second-place finish.

Combined with international ticket sales, the film has earned $214.6 million to date. Released by Sony subsidiary Columbia Pictures, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die debuted at No. 1 in its opening weekend June 7-9 with $56.5 million in domestic ticket sales.

Inside Out 2 faced no real big competition for this weekend's box office crown. Roadside Attractions' Henry VIII historical tale Firebrand, starring Jude Law and Alicia Vikander as the unhinged king and his sixth and final wife, Katherine Parr, opened in limited release at 442 theaters, according to The Numbers.

Coming in at No. 3 is 20th Century Studios' Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is still holding strong at the domestic box office since its May 10 opening. The latest film in the Planet of the Apes franchise earned an estimated $5.3 million at 2,600 North American theaters to bring its domestic tally to $157.8 million. Adding in this weekend's international ticket sales, Kingdom has earned $374.5 million globally to date.

Taking fourth place at the domestic box office this weekend is Columbia Pictures/Alcon Entertainment's animated hit The Garfield Movie. Columbia parent company Sony reports that Garfield took in an estimated $5 million at 3,411 theaters this weekend to bring its North American box office total to $78.5 million. Combined with the film's take of $139.2 million in overseas ticket sales, Garfield has earned $217.8 million worldwide through Sunday.

Rounding out the top five is New Line Cinema's horror thriller Watchers, which earned an estimated $3.6 million at 3,351 theaters to bring its domestic tally to $13.6 million. Adding in $9.6 million in international ticket sales, Watchers has earned $23.2 million globally to date.

Inside Out 2 is poised to take the top spot at next weekend's box office, with its only new competition coming from Focus Features' crime drama The Bikeriders. Starring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy, The Bikeriders is expected to open in 2,500 theaters on June 21.

The final numbers for this weekend's box office will be released on Monday.
