Man exonerated in sexual assault and murder of camping couple after 28 years

Twenty-eight years after Darrell Rice was first accused of sexually assaulting and murdering a couple camping in Shenandoah National Park, the FBI announced that Rice is innocent and that the murders were committed by Walter Leo Jackson, a serial rapist from Cleveland, who has been dead for six years.

The FBI made the announcement after DNA tests conclusively showed that Jackson was the killer, and not Rice.

Rice, who has been considered a suspect in the murder since 1996, was officially exonerated last week after years of false accusations and a lengthy investigation.

Rice's lawyer, Gerald Zerkin, criticized the authorities for their handling of the case, which he claimed led to false accusations and harassment of his client.

"It is tragic that the government's belated acknowledgement that someone other than Darrell killed Julie and Lollie has produced this false narrative," said Zerkin.

Zerkin argued that authorities had possessed exculpatory DNA evidence for "years" but became increasingly committed to convicting Rice despite this.

Rice was also accused of attacking Carmelita Shomo in 1996, which Enright advised Rice to accept a guilty plea for, despite not admitting guilt, to avoid the possibility of further harassment from the authorities.

"We never would have gotten an answer if we had not continued to fight, but I worry about what price Darrell has paid," said Enkind.

Zerkin concluded the press conference by reading a letter from Rice's sister, Dawn Metcalfe, expressing her disappointment for what her brother has endured.

"For Darrell, it's too late for a normal life," Metcalfe wrote in the letter.
