Rep. Lloyd Doggett, First Democrat to Challenge Biden, Calls for Him to Drop Out of Race

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, the Democratic House member from Texas, is the first prominent Democrat to call for Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. In a public statement, Doggett urges Biden to withdraw from the race, citing the importance of preventing a victory by Republican former President Donald Trump.

Recently, Biden delivered a disappointing debate performance, and polling has shown that Trump is gaining or has already gained a significant lead in polls.

Doggett expresses his sentiments by stating, "President Biden saved our democracy by delivering us from Trump in 2020. He must not deliver us to Trump in 2024."

The Texas representative respects Biden and acknowledges that the president has a history of putting the country first, not himself. He hopes that Biden will make a "painful and difficult decision to withdraw."

Doggett makes a historical analogy to President Lyndon B. Johnson, who withdrew from the presidential race in March 1968 amid unfavorable sentiments. Doggett represents the same congressional district previously represented by Johnson.

While other Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have publicly shown their support for Biden, Doggett is the first elected Democrat to call for the president to exit the race.

His statement comes after Biden failed to convene calls with congressional Democrats, a day before a reported teleconference of Democrat governors, organized by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, intended to hear from Biden.

Several recent polls have shown Trump leading Biden by considerable margins, including one from CNN that has Trump leading 49% to 43%, and one from Morning Consult revealing that 60% of Democrats believe Biden should be replaced on the ticket.

Swapping out Biden for another Democrat candidate could face legal hurdles due to a patchwork of state laws, according to The Heritage Foundation.

Despite the disappointing polling data and calls for his withdrawal from the race, the Biden family has reportedly discussed remaining resolved to stay in the 2024 contest.

Biden continues with campaign events, acknowledging his flaws in the previous night's debate but insisting, "I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. And I know how to do this job."
