Richmond funeral home celebrates 150 years of service

Bliley's Funeral Home, a cornerstone of Richmond's history, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Founded in 1874 by Joseph W. Bliley Sr., the business has endured throughout the city's evolution and continues to serve the community's changing needs.

A time of transition

Bliley's was founded in the aftermath of the Civil War, a period marked by great upheaval and transition for the city and its citizens. The business emerged as a vital source of support, providing essential services during a time of need. This foundational ethos of community support and service continues to guide the business to this day.

A multi-generational legacy

Being a funeral director is not just a job for the Bleilies, it's a family tradition. Carey Bliley, President and CEO of Bliley's Funeral Home, grew up immersed in the business. He reminisces about washing hearses in the garage as a child and learning the importance of honouring and supporting families experiencing loss. This tradition continues into the present day, as Carey's son, Eric, also works at the business, making him the fourth generation to carry on the family's legacy.

A changing city

Throughout its long history, Bliley's has continued to adapt and innovate to meet the changing needs of the community. In 2012, they opened a standalone cremation center, recognising the increasing popularity of cremation as a means of dealing with the loss of a loved one. The facility allows families to be more involved in the process and to create new rituals around saying goodbye.

A commitment to service

For Bliley's, providing the highest level of service and support to the community is paramount. They remain committed to maintaining the business as a beacon of support during times of grief and transition. For them, it's about doing something bigger than themselves and making a true difference in people's lives.

A bright future

Looking to the future, Bliley's Funeral Home hopes to continue to provide exceptional service and support to the Richmond community. They remain ever-evolving and adapting to the needs of the times, without forgetting the traditions and values that have guided them for the past 150 years.
