Summer Movie Guide: The Best & Worst Of What's Coming

Sure, we all have our favorite films from the year that was, but did they all need to be as long as they were? That's why we're grateful for the steady stream of major motion pictures scheduled for release in the next few months. There's truly something for everyone in this upcoming slate of movies, including (but not limited to) a Spider-Man villain origin story, a Pop-Tart movie, and an origin story for Mad Max's Furiosa.

Here's a look at 15 films that you might actually want to watch this summer, as well as 5 that you can't believe are actually happening.

Films we actually want to see

  1. I Saw The TV Glow (May 3)
  2. Babes (May 17)
  3. Kinds Of Kindness (June 21)
  4. MaXXXine (July 5)
  5. Percy Jackson And The Olympians (August 5)

I Saw The TV Glow director Jane Schoenbrun continues to establish themself as one of the most singular and intriguing voices in horror with this story that will likely strike close to home for a lot of people. This feels like the visual manifestation of a Phoebe Bridgers song, which is convenient because the singer actually pops up on screen about halfway through. Babes promises to do for pregnancy what Bridesmaids did for weddings. Kinds Of Kindness is an anthology film by Yorgos Lanthimos that's described as an "anthological fable of free will."

Films we can't believe are actually a thing

  1. Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story (May 3)
  2. Back To Black (May 17)
  3. Horizon: An American Saga (June 28)
  4. The Crow (August 23)
  5. Kraven The Hunter (August 30)

Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story is Netflix's first film directed by Seinfeld. Back To Black is a film about Amy Winehouse that's been authorized by her estate, which seems odd considering the documentary about her life was criticized for not being authorized by the family. Horizon: An American Saga is Kevin Costner's return to directing after more than 20 years. The Crow reboot is slated to premiere less than three months after the anniversary of the original film's release. Kraven The Hunter is one of Sony's many Spider-Man villain origin stories.
