Box Office Report: Civil War Wins Second Week, Abigail Underperforms

The weekend's big new releases included Abigail, Spy x Family Code: White, and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, but it was Alex Garland's Civil War that remained the number one movie in America for the second week in a row. With a weekend-to-weekend drop of 56 percent, Civil War added $11.1 million to its domestic total, which now stands at $44.9 million. The release made $2,832 on average at each of the nearly 4,000 cinemas, though it did expand its theater count by 91 locations.

Abigail debuted with $10.2 million, performing below expectations. It's off to a better start than other recent horror titles, such as Imaginary and The First Omen, but it debuted behind Night Swim in terms of box office performance. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare made $9 million to open in fourth place, rounding out the top five with Spy x Family Code: White, which earned $4.9 million.

Civil War is already Garland's biggest box office success as a director, outgrossing his previous films Annihilation and Ex Machina. It's also A24's highest-grossing release to date. The movie is currently the ninth biggest domestic hit of the year and looks to be a strong contender through award season.

Luca Guadagnino's Challengers and Richard Ramsey's Unsung Hero debut in theaters this Friday.
